This was my project car through college and now I needed something with more room and four doors. The interior of the car is in very good condition and the upholstery is nearly perfect still as I had seat covers for most of the 9 years I had this car. The power locks, windows, moonroof, and mirrors all work still work. The exterior is looking a little rough because the clearcoat is peeling badly on the roof and rear of the car. When I built the fiberglass hood I repainted the front and blended it back, so the paint up front isn´t in as bad of shape as the rear. The exhaust system behind the cat is badly rusted out. It gets 28 mpg on the highway. Unless you are competant driving a manual, do not expect a test drive. Details: Red Rocket Relocation Program- My old friend is up for sale. 1998 Mazda Protégé DX, 4-cylinder/5-speed, turn-key-and-go car, very dependable. Gently driven by non-smoker for past 5 years. Plenty of dings, dents, hail scars and rust if you look close, but starts every time, burns no oil, has had regular oil changes, gear oil changes, necessary upkeep, and zips straight along at highway speed with no vibration in the front end or column. Mechanic recently inspected CV joints, tie rod ends, etc, said ´Looks good; drive it´. I´m the second owner. The car was originally purchased by my Mother, who kept it maintained to manufacturer´ specs and drove it mostly highway miles. It has its problems, all of which will be detailed to interested parties, but nothing that keeps me from hopping in it any weekend and getting great mileage to the many destinations I choose for photography, hiking, etc. This little beast has delivered me faithfully 99.99% of the time, it´s only exception being a failed alternator that I replaced along with the battery two years ago. I have also replaced the water pump and rear wheel bearings. Everything works, solid spare (real rim w/ tire, plus the donut is in the well too). A friend and former car dealer told me he would put this on his lot for over $2000, so it´s 2K OBO. I will say this: It would be a great car for a mature responsible driver who needs a dependable work car with good mileage. It would probably not be a good car for a kid learning to drive a clutch. I have babied the clutch and it does not buck, chatter, or slip, but I drive it carefully, as the clutch has not been replaced since I bought the car, over 80,000 miles ago. Anyone who wanted to tear around corners and burn the tires wouldn´t get the real value out of this car. If you drive a manual transmission and want some cheap wheels you can drive today, call 217-620-3792 (if no answer, please leave message).
